The NINTH ANNUAL

BLACK MARRIAGE DAY CELEBRATION

is MARCH 25, 2012

The 6th Annual BLACK MARRIAGE DAY ESSAY CONTEST is underway!

HERE ARE THE RULES:

2012 National Black Marriage Day Essay Contest Rules & Instructions

  1. Contest One is open to adults ages 21 and over.
  2. Contest Two is open to all middle and high school students in St. Louis City and County.
  3. All participants must write an essay answering the appropriate question for their age or grade level. The questions are listed on the right of this page. 
  4. Adult essays should be 1,000 words.
  5. Middle School essays should be 500 words.
  6. High School essays should be 750  words.
  7. All essays should be typed, using 12 point standard fonts (Times New Roman, Arial, Tacoma, Verdana or Calibri), double spaced.  Include the writer’s name, age STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO INCLUDE their grade, school and teacher who assigned the essay.

First, Second and Third place winners will be chosen for each category (Adult, middle and high school).

 

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS FRIDAY MARCH 9, 2012 AT 5 PM. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY THIS DEADLINE TO BE CONSIDERED.

ENTRIES MUST BE MAILED OR HAND DELIVERED TO:

CHAARM/BMD Essay Contest 2433 N. Grand Blvd.             St. Louis, MO 63106. 

NO FAXED OR EMAILED ENTRIES.

 

Adult winners will receive Visa Gift Cards in the following amounts:

First Prize - $100.00

Second Prize - $75.00

Third Prize - $50.00 

Student winners will receive Gift Certificates in the following amounts: 

First Prize – 100.00  Dollars 

Second Prize – 50.00  Dollars

Third Prize – 25.00  Dollars

All participants will receive certificates of completion. Prizes will be awarded at a special ceremony on March 25, 2012

 

The 6th Annual Black Marriage Day Essay Contest Starts 

FEBRUARY 10, 2012

Adults 21 and over TOPIC:

"Why I am proud of my marriage." 

(1,000 word essay) 

Essay should address:

  • what's "good" about marriage?
  • at least three elements of a strong marriage
  • how your marriage relects those elements
  • a discussion of why you are proud of your spouse
  • why you are proud of your marriage

 Students 7th through 9th Grade TOPIC:

"When I Am Married..."

 (500 word essay)

Essay must include:

  • Why is marriage important to you?
  • What will you do to be a good husband or wife?
  • What makes a marriage a "good" marriage?
  • What qualities do you want your husband or wife to possess?
  • Why is marriage important to the community where you live?

 Students 10th through 12th Grade TOPIC: 

"Marriage is important because..."

(750 word essay)

Essay should address:

  • Brief History or (personal understanding) of marriage
  • Why is marriage important for families?
  • Why is marriage important to the community in which you live?
  • What factors cause problems in marriage?
  • How can someone help ensure that their marriage is healthy?
